Graphics Calculators CASIO fx-CG20 & fx-9860GII 9/19/16
Good morning Leo,
The calculators you have indicated (CASIO fx-CG20 & fx-9860GII) are not approved for use in the external examinations for the Stage 2 Mathematics subjects in 2016 or beyond.
The AU which appears on the end of the CASIO fx-CG20 on our approved calculator list indicates that the calculator meets our specifications. The lack of the AU indicates that it has capabilities which we do not approve (e.g. a much larger internal memory capability).
The fx-9860GII has been taken to our subject advisory group (the Mathematics Curriculum Leaders Group) twice and it has not been approved due to authenticity and legal reasons. It is a calculator that has been imported by a non-authorised company. This is a brief indication of the reasons, but please be assured we did everything in our power to consider the model and to do our research. It is also not approved for use in the external examinations for mathematics subjects.
Students can use these calculator models during the school year for the School-based assessment, however, the examination invigilators are required to check calculators as students enter the examination set by the SACE Board. Calculators that are not approved by the SACE Board being used within an examination (e.g. those not listed on the Approved Calculator document available on the website) will cause a student to be in Breach of Rules.
Dear Ms Cooper,
I would like to know whether approval can be granted for the use of CASIO fx-CG20 (without the AU at the end.) or fx-9860GII which is similar to fx-9860G AU PLUS.
I do not think there is any major difference between the two, apart from the country in which it is sold.
Yours sincerely,
Leo Graf
